Scanning a film for restoration converts each physical frame into digital data, and the resolution chosen for that scan determines how much of the original detail ultimately survives the process. Higher resolution scans capture finer grain and subtler texture, but they also demand considerably more storage space and processing time throughout the project.
Choosing a resolution is rarely a purely technical decision made in isolation, since it also depends on the physical condition of the source material and the intended final use of the finished restoration. A scan destined for large screen projection typically requires far greater precision than one intended mainly for smaller home viewing formats.
Once scanned, the digital files themselves become new archival assets that must be stored and maintained with their own careful protocols. In this sense, a restoration project quietly creates a fresh preservation responsibility even as it resolves the original one, which becomes clearer with repeated, attentive viewing.
Archives often revisit older scans as technology improves, rescanning a source at higher resolution once better equipment becomes available and affordable. This means restoration is rarely a single finished event but rather an ongoing relationship between a film and the evolving tools used to preserve it properly.
