Why Colour Can Fade and How It Is Corrected

Colour film relies on chemical dyes layered within the print itself, and those dyes can shift or fade unevenly over time, often leaving an image with a pink or magenta cast long before any other visible damage even appears to a casual viewer. Heat and light exposure tend to accelerate this process considerably over the years.
Correcting faded colour requires careful reference to what the original palette actually looked like, drawn from surviving elements, documentation or earlier generation prints that happened to fade less severely than others. Restorers work frame by frame, or in careful passes, to rebuild a believable and consistent colour balance throughout the entire running time.
The goal is never to invent a brighter, more modern look that never existed in the first place, but to recover what audiences originally saw decades earlier. Done well, this careful correction is almost invisible, simply letting a film look convincingly like itself again after years of decline.
Comparing a corrected print against archival colour references requires patience and a trained eye, since even small miscalculations can shift a scene's mood in ways a casual viewer might not consciously notice but would still feel. That careful attention is part of why colour correction remains one of restoration's most demanding tasks.
